We have three closets in our 750 square foot apartment. Two closets are located in one of the bedrooms and the third closet is located off of our kitchen. We’ve had to think strategically about how to maximize our precious closet storage space and make it functional for our family of five. We recently added shelving and a pegboard organization system to the pantry where we house our toy/art supply rotation. A pegboard organization system is easy to install, can be customized for a variety of spaces, and is budget friendly!

Toy/Art Rotation Closet

Our oldest daughters have an OBSESSION with small toy sets and craft supplies. And while they’d love to have their favorite toys within arms reach ALL the time, their little two-year-old sister can’t be trusted. Because all 3 girls share a play space, and because the playroom in our NYC apartment measures 6.5 feet wide by 14 feet long, we’ve set up a toy/art supply rotation in our kitchen pantry. We want our girls to have access to their toys, but they don’t need access to ALL of their toys at the same time.

Pantry Organization

I recently installed floor to ceiling shelving on two side walls in the pantry. These shelves organize small toy sets, art supplies, and learning materials. I’d considered adding additional shelving to the back wall of the pantry, but the wall is severely bowed in the middle. After trying several different shelving configurations, I determined that shelving on the back wall wouldn’t work in the space. Since installing additional shelving was not an option, I researched other methods.

To add additional storage to the pantry, I decided to install a pegboard to the back wall. We wanted an area that could store office supplies, household supplies, and tech equipment. Pegboards are inexpensive, easy to install, and can be customized to fit a variety of needs.

Pegboard Installation

I installed the pegboard roughly 3 feet from the floor so that the girls art cart could fit underneath. The space between the two sets of shelves on either wall was 24 inches, so I was able to install a pre-cut 24 inch x 48 inch piece of pegboard. Start to finish, I was able to install the pegboard in less than 30 minutes!

pegboard

I attached two 24-inch strips of wood to the back of the pantry wall, one for the top of the pegboard and one for the bottom. Then I screwed the pegboard onto the upper and lower board strips. Here are the supplies I used:

Pegboard: 24 inch x 48 inch

Poplar Board: 1 inch x 2 inch x 8 foot S4S – cut into 24 inch strips

Wood Screws

Cordless Drill

Pegboard Organization System

Once securely attached to the wall, I was able to add pegboard bins, cups, and baskets. The bins, cups, and baskets fit 1/4 inch pegboards and provide valuable storage on the back wall. They also allow the space to be customized in so many different ways.

This set of 6 matching cups and rings help organize pens, pencils, scissors, and various types of markers. These cups come in a pack of 6 and are available in white, black, and transparent.

We added a 4 pack of baskets that came in 4 sizes, Extra Large (14”L x 6”W x 4”D), Large (12”L x 5”W x 3.5”D), Medium (10”L x 4”W x 3”D), Small (8”L x 3.5”W x 2.5”D). In the baskets we store tech equipment including chargers, laptops, and mailing supplies.

The 12 pack of clear bins hold small categories of office supplies. The small bins measure 3.9″ L x 3.9″ W x 1.9″ H. I love that we are able to organize small categories of items, and we’re able to see into the bins!

Thanks for pinning!
