This week we reset our playroom with an Animals theme! We love setting out toys and books from our toy rotation closet to reignite creative play for our 3 daughters. We partnered with Candlewick Press books to review more of their latest kids picture books, and they sent us 5 new animal picture books that were perfect for this week’s theme.

After reading the fun stories and looking at the beautiful illustrations, our 6-year-old provided her own review of each animal picture book. Check out her full IGTV review! I’m also providing a brief summary and linking to each of the new animal picture books here, so that you can check them out and share them with a little reader in your life!

Ages 0-3

animal picture books: Australian Baby Animals

Australian Baby Animals (ages 0-3): written and illustrated by Frané Lessac

This adorable book shows Australian baby animals with their mothers and fathers. It introduces kids to the unique names Australian baby animals are given, like puggles or joeys. It is filled with cute illustrations and our girls loved learning about the different animals in other parts of the world.

Ages 2-5

animal picture books: Ergo

Ergo (ages 2-5): written by Alexis Deacon, illustrated by Viviane Schwarz

What would it be like if you woke up and discovered that you are the whole world, the world is you, and you have discovered everything there is in the world? This book shares the experience of a little chick who wakes up inside her egg, and then eventually discovers the “wall” around her that is keeping her safe. She hears a noise beyond the wall and wonders what else is out there in the world. This book is clever, funny, and also inspirational, as the chick eventually decides it is worth risking everything she knows to discover what is beyond her little world.

Ages 3-7

animal picture books: How to be Cooler Than Cool

How to Be Cooler than Cool (ages 3-7): written by Sean Taylor, illustrated by Jean Jullien

The graphic cartoon animals in this book discover a pair of sunglasses on the playground, and decide they make them look cool! So cool that they decided to try to look extra cool by doing risky moves like sliding backwards down the slide, dancing on top of the seesaw, or standing on the swing. The animals discover maybe that’s not the best way to try to look cool, and the little chick shows that coolness can come from within, and from having regular fun! This is a great story to read with young kids who may find themselves wanting to impress their peers!

animal picture books: The Walloos' Big Adventure

The Walloos’ Big Adventure (ages 3-7): written and illustrated by Anuska Allepuz

Our girls love his colorful and humorous story about a family of Walloos. They live on a small, rocky island, and decide to have an adventure and travel to a tropical island. Little Walloo gets a funny feeling about the new island, and the family soon discovers that something is not quite right, because the island is moving! Our girls love adventures and the joy of discovering a new place, so this was a fun story to be surprised by together!

Ages 5-8

animal picture books: North & South

North and South: A Tale of Two Hemispheres (ages 5-8): written and illustrated by Sandra Morris

This book shows the difference between seasons in the northern hemisphere and southern hemisphere. The book walks through each month of the year, and shows how animals in different parts of the world adapt to the changing seasons. It is filled with interesting information and beautiful illustrations. Our girls were fascinated by the fun facts about each of the animals featured.
