We partnered with Candlewick Press books to review more of their latest kids picture books. They sent us 9 new children’s books, with fun stories and beautiful illustrations. Our daughters love books, and after listening to the stories, our 6-year-old provided her own review of each one. I’m providing a brief summary and linking to each of the new kids picture books here, so that you can check them out and share them with a little reader in your life!

Kids Picture Books

Ages 0-3

Monster Clothes and Monster Food: written & illustrated by Daisy Hirst

These cute board books show colorful monsters choosing clothes to wear and food to eat. Some of the monsters get dressed in socks or hats, while others try on a tomato, wear toy cars, or put leaves on their head. Similarly, some monsters eat peaches, pears, noodles, or stew, while others eat chairs, a shoe or a rake. The books are the perfect combination of serious and silly, and kept our girls entertained and giggling.

Ages 3-7

Hugo: written by Atinuke, illustrated by Birgitta Sif

This is the sweet story of a pigeon named Hugo who takes care of a local park and the people who live around it. There is one little girl, who Hugo calls Somebody, who typically hides inside. In this charming story of friendship and bravery, he coaxes her out to the park and helps her make new friends in the community.

The More the Merrier: written by David Martin, illustrated by Raissa Figueroa

The animals in this book show off their dance moves in lots of fun styles. They all have different bodies and personalities, so they all dance in different ways and celebrate their individuality.

Noah’s Seal: written and illustrated by Layn Marlow

Noah plays in the sand while his Nana fixes their sailboat. He is eagerly anticipating a journey to see real seals, and spends his time sculpting a seal in the sand. A storm blows in and he and Nana take cover in the sailboat, under a tarp. After the storm, his sand seal is gone, but a real seal takes its place! This is a delightful summer read!

Phoebe Dupree is Coming to Tea!: written by Linda Ashman, illustrated by Alea Marley

This is a beautiful story of friendship. Abby admires her friend Phoebe and thinks she is perfect, so she wants to plan the perfect tea party playdate. The party is anything but perfect, but Abby quickly learns you don’t have to be perfect to have a friend.

Dakota Crumb: Tiny Treasure Hunter: written by Jamie Michalak, illustrated by Kelly Murphy

This is an eye-catching seek-and-find book with a unique story. A tiny mouse treasure hunter explores a large museum in a big city. She collects tiny treasures from the big museum at night, and sets them up in her own tiny museum for her fellow creatures to admire during the day. The end of the book is full of illustrations of additional treasures for readers to go back and discover hidden throughout the pages.

Ages 5-8

It Could Be Worse: written & illustrated by Einat Tsarfati

Two sailors have a very different outlook on life as they float along on what’s left of their ship. One sailor is miserable and observes everything that is going wrong, while the other sailor continues to remind him that it could be worse. And every time he says those words… it immediately gets worse. Of course hilarity ensues, but they discover that even the worst days can eventually turn around, especially when you’re with friends.

Ride the Wind: written by Nicola Davies, illustrated by Salvatore Rubbino

Javier finds an injured bird caught on the hooks in his father’s fishing boat. He takes it home and begins nursing it back to health. The bird accepts the care and food, but shows no attempts to use her wings. Javier creatively helps the bird learn to ride the wind to remember how to fly, so that she can find her way back home.
