We like to use birthdays and holidays to choose items in the categories of “something you want, something you need, something to wear, something to read.” Here are some fun birthday gifts for 6-10 year olds, inspired by our two older girls!

Something You Want
Our kids always enjoying a new toy, game, or activity on their birthday! If you’re wondering “what are 6-10 year olds playing with?”, here are things we think our girls will enjoy. They love playing outside, doing puzzles and crafts, and playing games. Those are great categories for something you want.
Better Than Balloons
With spring birthdays, it can be fun to gift an outside toy. This Better Than Balloons water toy has lots of water pods that can be played with outside by throwing, splashing, stomping, or popping, but unlike traditional water balloons, they stay in one piece and are easy to clean up.
Build A Bubble Kit
This is another great outdoor activity for kids. Even big kids can enjoy bubbles! This bubble kit contains various rods and connectors, so kids can create bubbles in different 3D geometric shapes. This kit is a fun way for kids to practice their STEAM skills in a unique and creative way.

We also try to choose things that our daughters won’t “play” with, but will still “use”, and consider those items to fit in the something you need category. What does a 6-10 year old need? Our girls recently got their ears pierced and could use a travel jewelry box. They also enjoy having their own first aid kit with bandages to keep in their backpack or take to the park. They also like to draw and write, so we like to check to see if any pens/markers need replaced, and include a pencil case to stay organized.

Our older girls recently got their ears pierced, and this travel jewelry case will be perfect for keeping their jewelry organized when we’re on vacation. It can be personalized by choosing from 8 colors, adding their name, and selecting the flower that matches their birth month.

Something to Wear

Our girls love playing dress-up at home, and also doing gymnastics and ballet. These leotard ballet dresses are perfect for playing or dancing. They have a soft, stretchy material, and a twirly skirt.

Our girls enjoy wearing dresses for almost any occasion! We like to keep them stocked up on comfortable cotton dresses in their size, and they pair them with cartwheel shorts or leggings.
Cartwheel Shorts
In the spring and summer, our girls like to grab a dress, slip on a pair of cartwheel bike shorts, and then head out to play. These come in a 5 pack that has a variety of colors they can mix/match.
Quality Sunglasses
These heart sunglasses are super cute, and are also ultra-lightweight, flexible, and virtually indestructible. We love that the arms bend (rather than break)! They also come with a carrying pouch that doubles as a polishing cloth!
Hair Elastics
Our girls love wearing their hair in ponytails or braids, so we have been using lots of these little elastic hair bands! This set comes in a tub with a lid, and is great for lots of different hair styles. (Choose from multi-color, clear, brown, or black)
Waterproof Sneakers
These are the BEST shoes for walking outside in all weather. They are 100% waterproof! We have a walking commute to school, and these shoes are more comfortable to walk in than clunky rain boots. We love that when they get to school on rainy days, their socks and feet are still dry.
Something to Learn/Read
We like to include a gift that encourages our girls to learn more about a topic they are interested in. Our oldest daughter is very interested in learning how to sew, so a beginner sewing kit is a great gift. Our middle daughter loves learning to draw new things, so a learn to draw book is perfect for her. They both love to read, and have been really into graphic novels lately. We are encouraging them to expand their reading into non-fiction as well, and a colorful encyclopedia is a fun one for something to learn/read.

Hi, my name is Tyler Moore. My wife and I live with our three young daughters in a 700- square-foot apartment in New York City.
