Getting in and out of the door is so much easier when you have an entryway system! In a house or apartment, you may not have a garage, mud room, coat closet, or separate entryway area. But you can still set up an entryway system in your home!

When the items you need are organized by the door, the process of getting in and out of your home is so much easier. Here are the organizational and design pieces that we’ve added next to our door:

Key Hooks & Mail Holder – It’s important to have a consistent spot to drop keys and mails when you’re coming in the door! Our mail holder is available in white or black.

Storage Cabinet – We added a storage locker with shelves right next to our door, and filled it with bins and baskets to store seasonal items, like sunscreen and sunglasses in the summer, and hats and gloves in the winter. Ours was a “trash to treasure” find that we spray painted silver, but this one is similar!

Clear Storage Bins – We added clear storage bins inside of the storage cabinet to hold items like sunglasses, hats, gloves, scarves, any other items we need to grab when we’re getting out the door!

Mirror – It’s nice to have a mirror right by the door, and it also bounces light around our living room area.

Shoe Tray – We always take our shoes off as soon as we enter our home, and this tray helps contain any dirt, rain, or snow that may be on the bottom of the shoes.

Shoe Rack – This 3-tier shoe rack gives us a spot for each person in our family to store a couple of pairs of shoes right by the door.

Wall Hooks & Over-the-Door Hooks – Our apartment doesn’t have a coat closet, so we’ve added wall hook and over-the-door hooks for hanging jackets and backpacks.

I hope seeing our getting-out-the-door area that we’ve created as an entryway system in our home helps to inspire you to think about how you could set up a system that works for your family in your space!

About me

Hi, my name is Tyler Moore. My wife and I live with our three young daughters in a 700- square-foot apartment in New York City. I began my tidying journey when an early-30’s crisis invited me to reflect upon, challenge, and change my patterns of daily living. I quit my job as a school administrator, returned to teaching, and started Tidy Dad to help others tidy, simplify, and find joy in their lives. I firmly believe the tidying process can transform your life. I’d love for you to join me in exploring ways that tidying can make room for what’s important in life.
