Our entire Woodland Cottage needs a fresh coat of paint this summer. We’re using the opportunity to repaint with eggshell paint instead of flat paint because it’s easier to wipe clean. It’s also an opportunity to update paint colors! We decided to start with the 2 upstairs bedrooms, and paint white walls with a blue ceiling!

With a short-term rental property, we’re able to take a few design chances, because this isn’t where we (or the renters) live all the time. It’s fun to go into those rental places that have their own special vibe.

Our cottage is located in the woods in the Poconos of Pennsylvania, and we’ve played up that wooded theme in several different rooms. For the 2 upstairs bedrooms, we’ve updated the walls with fresh coats of Sherman Williams White Flour and the ceilings with Sherman Williams Aerial View. The light blue ceiling color was a bit of a risk, but it now almost feels like the bedrooms open directly into the sky above.

Here’s a look at some Before and After photos of both bedrooms and some of our favorite bedroom accessories and features!

After

The original walls were a tan beige, with traditional white ceilings. I love how the fresh white color helps the HVAC unit on the wall to have less visual attention. The blue ceiling is a bright yet subtle pop of color, contrasted against the white walls.

We have a sound machine in every bedroom at the cottage. When we are staying there, our girls LOVE to bring their Yoto Player. It is an audio player with story cards that can be inserted, and they listen while they fall asleep.

The shelf on the wall is a new trash to treasure find! We had tried a few small furniture pieces in this area, like a bookshelf or small dresser, but they all seemed to obstruct the walkway. The bunk bed is a twin over a full with a trundle that can be pulled out onto the floor as an extra bed. This shelf was a perfect solution to add a bit of storage space without taking up any precious floor space. I painted it the same color white as the walls.

We added a large framed piece of art that embraces the wooded feel of our area. The wicker tray is a perfect landing place for a phone or other small items. Our globe planter pot embraces our love of travel, and continues with the blues and greens in this room. The small white lamp adds another lighting source to the room, in addition to the overhead lighting and the wall sconces.

The original walls were white with matching white ceilings. The new light blue ceiling adds a nice bit of contrast.

blue ceiling

I like how the blue ceiling coordinate with the blue wall color we used in our closet office space. The “cloffice” was created by adding a folding computer desk and a bright yellow swivel chair. We have considered switching the overhead light fixture in this room for a ceiling fan. The other main light sources in this room are the matching aged brass bedside table lamps. I love their large clear globes, vintage-style light bulbs, and dimmer features.

This bedroom has a dresser in the corner for clothing storage since the closet has been transformed into a “cloffice”. We put an antique lamp, a footed bowl, and a gold magnifying makeup mirror on top.

Overall, this was an easy painting project that elevated the look of our upstairs bedrooms at the Woodland Cottage. We love the unexpected, whimsical blue ceiling in both rooms. We are very happy with how they turned out!

About me

Hi, my name is Tyler Moore. My wife and I live with our three young daughters in a 700- square-foot apartment in New York City. I began my tidying journey when an early-30’s crisis invited me to reflect upon, challenge, and change my patterns of daily living. I quit my job as a school administrator, returned to teaching, and started Tidy Dad to help others tidy, simplify, and find joy in their lives. I firmly believe the tidying process can transform your life. I’d love for you to join me in exploring ways that tidying can make room for what’s important in life.
