I love a good Tidy Dad design project! In 2020 we completed 15 projects in our home! One of the projects was to update a closet at our Woodland Cottage by turning it into an office, or “cloffice”. With a budget of $250 and a bit of leftover paint, I designed a “cloffice” workspace that is perfect for my work as a remote teacher.

Recently, I started a new Tidy Dad design “cloffice” project for a NYC-based client who has a second home in the Poconos where she often works remotely. Her closet is larger than ours, measuring 6ft by 9ft. The closet has a window and two shelves, but needed a few updates to be used as an office. While working remotely, the client frequently needs to be on video conferences. She wanted wall behind her desk updated to look more professional. Overall, she wanted the space to feel “less like a closet.”

The walk-in closet is located in one of the bedrooms in the house. The bi-fold doors can provide a sound barrier when the client is working inside.

The client had already purchased a desk, filing cabinet, and chair, which she wanted to keep in the space. However, she still felt like she was working in a closet. She wanted to update several elements that made it feel like a closet, like the tan carpet, white wall panels, and high shelves. She decided to consult me for a Tidy Dad Design to create an overall design scheme for the space.

Design

We started with an initial design consultation over video chat. Then I reconfigured the spatial layout of the closet and sent her some layout designs. I proposed we keep her desk and filing cabinet, and repurpose an existing high shelf in the room as a lower shelf over her desk. I also suggested purchasing some additional furniture and design pieces like a credenza, lamp, and curtains and a rug to cover the carpet. We also decided to change the wall that is seen behind her during video conferences from a paneling wall to a board and batten wall.

Inspiration

After the client approved the spatial layout of the room, I developed the specific design scheme by selecting colors and sourcing items to purchase. While one focus of the design was on simply adding additional storage to the space, I also wanted to add some professional workspace touches and personal details! The client had a few pieces of artwork and other decorative items she already liked in the space. I grouped her items together, analyzed them, and designed the color scheme with the tone and feel of these colors in mind.

Mood Board

After analyzing her pieces, I designed a mood board that incorporated the look and feel of the design items that were already in the room. I chose a rug that incorporated blues, golds, and browns, and then developed the scheme around these color tones. I wanted the overall look to be professional, warm, and calming.

The client loved the mood board, so I shared the sources with her and then the ordering process began! From start to finish, this part of the “cloffice” makeover has all happened virtually! I’m excited to get into the room in the coming weeks and see the space transform!
