We love to try out new pizza dough recipes. Friday nights in our household are officially known as “Pizza and Baking Show” nights!

We roll up our sleeves, make homemade pizza dough, and try to invent new ways to enjoy one of our favorite savory treats. The girls love to help me knead and roll out the dough, and of course LOVE to place on the toppings!

We then enjoy our pizzas while watching our favorite baking shows together as a family. Who needs movies when you have baking shows?!?

I’m sharing my favorite pizza dough recipe, along with three different delicious recipes to use the dough. Let it inspire your own baking!

Martha Stewart’s Quick Basic Dough Recipe is by far the most user-friendly dough recipe I’ve come across. I’ve modified the recipe slightly at the kneading stage. My dough is typically pretty sticky after the first proof, so it’s helpful to add an additional 1 cup to 2 cups of flour!

Basic Pizza Dough

Ingredients

  • 2 envelopes (1/4 ounce each) active dry yeast (not rapid-rise)
  • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for bowl and brushing
  • 4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour, plus an additional 1-2 cups for kneading
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons salt

Directions

  1. Pour 1 1/2 cups warm water into a large bowl. Sprinkle with yeast and let stand until foamy, about 5 minutes.
  2. Whisk sugar, oil, and salt into yeast mixture. Add flour and stir until a sticky dough forms.
  3. Transfer dough to an oiled bowl and brush top with oil. Cover bowl with plastic wrap (we prefer to cover with our reusable silicone lid that automatically forms an airtight seal on any bowl) and set aside in a warm, draft-free place until dough has doubled in bulk, about 1 hour.
  4. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead 1 to 2  cups of flour into the dough.
  5. Dough can be stored in an oiled bowl covered with plastic in refrigerator up to 2 hours.
  6. Turn out dough on a floured surface and roll dough.

Every once in a while it’s fun to bake a Chicago Style Deep Dish pizza. Our Lodge cast iron skillet is the perfect baking dish for a deep crust pizza that is filled with layers of cheese, pepperoni, and veggies!

Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza

Ingredients

  • 1/2 of pizza dough recipe (from above)
  • 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
  • 8 oz mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup marinara sauce
  • Pepperoni or sausage
  • Veggies (peppers, olives, onions)

Directions

  1. Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees
  2. Brush cast iron skillet with 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil (this helps give the crust a nice crunch!)
  3. Turn out dough onto a lightly floured surface and roll until 1/4 inch flat
  4. Carefully pick up rolled out dough and drape over the cast iron skillet, gently pushing the center of the dough to the base of the pan
  5. Roll down the dough around the edges, forming a thick crust
  6. Layer pepperoni, veggies, cheese, and then spoon on sauce (avoid putting sauce directly on the pizza dough. This will cause the bottom to be soggy!)
  7. Repeat layering process until toppings reach the top of the crust
  8. Bake pizza for 20-25 minutes or until cheese is bubbly and the crust is golden brown

While the rest of the family is fairly adventurous, I have one little girl who chooses only to eat plain cheese pizza. I used 1/2 of the pizza dough recipe for the Chicago Style pizza, 1/4 of the dough to make a personal size cheese pizza, and saved 1/4 of the dough for a dessert pizza.

Personal Size Cheese Pizza

Ingredients

  • 1/4 of pizza dough recipe (from above)
  • 2 oz mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup marinara sauce
  • Corn Meal (helps you to transfer the pizza to the stone with ease!)

Directions

  1. Place pizza stone in the oven. Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees
  2. Turn out dough onto a lightly floured surface and roll until 1/4 inch flat
  3. Sprinkle corn meal onto wooden cutting board
  4. Carefully pick up rolled out dough and place on prepared wooden cutting board
  5. Spoon on marinara sauce and then sprinkle on cheese
  6. Bake pizza for 15 minutes or until cheese is bubbly and the crust is golden brown

As if Chicago Style Pizza wasn’t indulgent enough, I’ve also created my very own Peach Dessert Pizza. I even added yogurt dipping sauce in our Fiesta creamer bowl. Remember that the basic pizza dough recipe can be stored in the refrigerator for several days or frozen up to three months, so don’t feel pressured to use it all at once!
