Emily is 19 weeks pregnant with our third child. A GIRL.
We learned that Emily was pregnant this summer, while riding bikes near my childhood home (see Hometown Tour) in La Grange, Kentucky. Here’s the story.
As we biked along the winding paths, Emily giggled to herself. I stopped riding and asked her why she was laughing.
She said,”Oh, nothing,” and kept on riding.
Several minutes later, I asked again. She giggled again and said, “I think I might be pregnant.”
“Really?” I said with a huge grin on my face, “How do you know?”
“Well, I’ve felt this way twice before,” Emily said, before pedaling away in front of me.
“Want to stop at Dollar Tree for some tests before Dairy Queen?” I asked.
Emily laughed and said, “Yes.”
Moments later, over two Dairy Queen blizzards, we learned the results of the test. Positive.
We finished our blizzards. Rode the bikes back home with our little secret.
We held the secret for a few days before sharing with our families.
With each pregnancy, I’ve struggled with sharing the news with others. There is something so incredibly special about bringing new life into the world, but there are aspects of the pregnancy announcement part that can be hard.
Each time I’ve shared our pregnancy news, I realized I have to be ready to take questions. This third pregnancy has been no different. As we’ve shared with family and friends, lots of questions have followed: Was this planned? Were you trying for a boy? Are you going to move away from NYC? Or at least move out of your apartment? How are you going to have all those girls in a home with one bathroom?
Here are some quick answers:
Yes, we always wanted to have three kids.
No, we weren’t trying for a boy.
No, we’re not planning to move away from NYC or out of our apartment.
Yes, it’s going to be tight, but at this point the girls don’t know any different.
I’ve also struggled with making a pregnancy announcement because of the mixture of emotions that I feel inside. With each pregnancy I’ve felt terrified. I worry about the new little life. With each of Emily’s pregnancy symptoms I wonder if what she is going through is “normal” or “typical.”
As a male, I can only experience the pregnancy by watching the ultrasounds, feeling the baby kick, and listening to what Emily tells me. As someone who struggles with control, sometimes it is so hard to sit back and simply watch the pregnancy unfold.
This pregnancy has been challenging for us. Emily has had terrible morning sickness and has been exhausted. Mabel and Matilda have so much energy and are very early risers.
This pregnancy has also been joyous for us. It has been such fun to share the news with Mabel and Matilda and watch their growing excitement. Especially when they found out the baby was going to be another sister!
Oh, I’ll end with another answered question! (see Bedroom Redo) Why did you design the new bedroom to have 3 wardrobes? The third wardrobe is really for the new baby.
