5th Avenue is home to some pretty amazing shops! It can also be a NYC wonderland for kids. It’s fun to look at the window displays, and also to go inside the stores. The stores are eager to welcome people in, EVEN kids! So the next time you’re looking for an adventure day in NYC, explore 5th Avenue with kids!
We like to start visits to 5th Avenue at the base of Central Park, at 59th street. I recommend starting early in the morning, when the stores first open and crowds are less. We pick up bagels or donuts from a local shop and eat in Grand Army Plaza. Then we make our way walking down to Rockefeller Center. Along the way we visit our favorite kid-friendly shops.
The Tiffany’s flagship store on 57th street is currently under construction, but directly next door is Tiffany’s temporary location. The temporary location captures the essence of the iconic store (picture diamonds upon diamonds!) and features a new interactive exhibit that’s perfect for visits with kids.
Tiffany’s new “Lock” exhibit features an interactive photo booth! For FREE, you can take a photo, embellish it with writings or drawings, email yourself a copy of the photo, and get a printed hard copy. The girls were so excited to experience the “Lock” photo booth and take home printed copies of their photos.
If you head upstairs to the 4th floor and visit customer service, they’ll give your kids coloring sheets and individual crayon sets. The pink sofas are a great place for kids to rest their legs and there are restrooms located nearby. And when you’re finished, Tiffany’s staff will even give you an iconic Tiffany’s bag to carry the coloring items home!
We like to call the American Girl Doll Store the “Baby Doll Museum.” Located directly next to our former pediatrician, we used to visit this store often as celebration for successful doctor’s visits! The store features two floors of interactive displays for kids. Our girls love playing with the baby dolls, doll strollers, and play kitchens. They could easily spend hours playing here!
I recommend arriving at the store close to opening time, as it can get extremely busy. The lower level is typically less crowded than the upper floor and also features restrooms.
If you visit guest services on the bottom floor, the staff will sometimes give your kids FREE stickers and/or paper doll sets!
The Lego Store is also on 51st Street, and is an interactive store and play area for kids. The store can get quite busy so sometimes there is a line outside that helps control the number of people inside the store at any given time. The Lego creations on display are absolutely amazing and Margaret enjoyed driving the NYC taxi cab made completely out of Legos.
There are also multiple creation areas in the store and we enjoyed building together. There’s something calming and cathartic about building and playing together.
FAO Schwarz is located in Rockefeller Center directly across the street from Studio 1A, home to the Today Show and future home to Tidy Dad segments. I’m going ahead and manifesting that dream here!
The store features two floors of toy displays and several interactive booths for kids to interact with select toys. The girls loved visiting the FAO Schwarz Baby Adoption Center. A worker in this area pulled down several babies from the display and let the girls rock them and feed them bottles.
Rockefeller Plaza is one of our family’s favorite places in the city. When visiting 5th Avenue with kids, it can be a nice spot for a rest break and snack break. In the wintertime you can watch skaters on the iconic ice rink and in the spring and summertime you can enjoy the art displays and beautiful flowers.
Tidy Travels are a must on city adventure days. We packed snacks and water in our small backpack and we left the stroller at home. Our toddler carrier is perfect for getting Margaret to and from locations.
We had such a fun adventure day on 5th Avenue. We hope this guide inspires your own NYC adventure, exploring 5th Avenue with kids!
