Window Screens
The summer temperatures here in Pennsylvania have been idyllic. Our cottage is completely surrounded by trees, and the house stays cool in the shade. The majority of the homes in our neighborhood don’t have a central AC system, because there really isn’t a need. People just open their windows and enjoy the fresh air!
The Problem
While that sounds wonderful, early this summer we realized that we had a problem. Only 4 of the 10 windows that open in our cottage had window screens. When we looked closer at those 4 screens, we discovered 2 had bent frames, 1 had a large rip in the corner, and 1 fit so poorly that it could easily be pushed out of the window!
We decided that we wanted to invest in new window screens for all 10 windows. I did a quick Google search to see what options were available for purchasing window screens. I learned that I could hire a window company to come and measure custom screens for our windows or I could purchase traditional rigid window screens from a home improvement store. Not happy with either of those options, I searched “rigid window screen alternative,” and FlexScreen was the first company to pop up!
The Solution
I learned that FlexScreen sells the world’s first and only flexible window screen! Traditional window screens have rigid frames, which are prone to bend and break when installing. After working for 20+ years in the window industry, founder Joe Altieri created a flexible window screen product that solved this inherent problem with traditional window screens. He created FlexScreen, a Pennsylvania-based company that manufactures custom-sized flexible window screens. Altieri appeared on season 11 of Shark Tank, and landed a deal with Lori Greiner.
FlexScreen Options
We partnered with FlexScreen to makeover our windows, by installing 10 of their flexible window screens. FlexScreen sells 5 mesh options, including Standard, Flexview, Flexview Clean, Flexview Tuff, and Flexview Solar. We chose the Flexview Clean option, which boasts a hydrophobic water-repelling coating that helps to keep the screens clean for supreme visibility.
Measuring
The next step was to remove all of our old, bent window screens. We then went to the “How To” page of their website and watched the videos on how to accurately measure our window openings for screens. There are two approaches they recommend for measuring, including videos and a PDF tutorial. I found the “Measuring with Mock-Ups” technique to be easiest for me to follow. I taped together 2 boxes to fit the width of the window inside the window screen track, and then measured the box to know the exact measurements we needed for the window screen.
FlexScreen creates custom window screens for each order (in square or rectangle shape, up to 55″ wide by 80″ high), so we were able to enter exact measures for our 10 windows.
First Impression
FlexScreen orders typically take 10-14 business days to arrive. When our order was delivered, I literally jumped for joy! My first impression FlexScreen review was that they were so beautiful and sleek. They looked and felt so much different from our old screens because I could immediately bend them and they popped right back to shape. I was so excited to get them installed!
Installing
I found the FlexScreen to be incredibly easy to install! I bent the sides in, fit the screen into the screen track one corner at a time, and then let go. As described on the website, the FlexScreen snapped effortlessly into place!
Removing
I also practiced removing the window screens, which is very important to me when cleaning window sills. Our home is completely surrounded by trees, so we often find sap, dirt, bits of leaves, and spider webs collecting along the exterior window sills. I followed the directions on the website to push the center of the screen until the edges began to bend. Then I grabbed both sides of the screen and pulled towards the center, before walking each corner out of the pocket. They were easy to remove, and then easy to reinstall. These really are the perfect window screens!
Overall FlexScreen Review
We are so happy with our new FlexScreen window screens! They are easy to install and easy to remove. They keep the bugs out while allowing us to enjoy the beautiful views and fresh outside air… from inside! They also have a lifetime warranty and excellent customer service, making them the last window screens we will ever need to buy.
